Explore my life through my heart, is the title of a poem Afirebird wrote when she was just 14 years old. She wrote it at a time when she was desperately heartbroken and depressed, surviving on a cocktail of Phil Collins songs from her father's musical collection. Now years later, those same six words placed side by side, best describe her musical journey.

The Dust Years, is part of a collection of over a hundred songs and poems written across an 11 year period. Written in a state of constant melancholia fuelled by the madness of love and sometimes brutal nature of life. A period of her life she likes to refer to as "the dust years".

Heavily influenced by periods of loss and solitude, battles with her faith, her decadent fragility, her poetry and characters that waltz through her life. The space and stories she and these characters share, have shared, naturally are part of her musical journey.

This project reflects her current state of mind, her acceptance and burning down of the old, rising from the dust, her hope and anticipation of the new. The phoenix and dark eye make-up? Let's just call that her superhero costume. We all burn to the ground at some point in life with hopes of coming back golden.

"Most beings spring from other individuals;

but there is a certain kind which reproduces itself.

The Assyrians call it the phoenix"

Publius Ovidius Naso
